2011 Fall Series Notes

October 2, 2011Races 1-5 – Sunny and warm in the 60’s, shifty breeze 5-15 mph from the SW. A total of six M-scows came to the line (4 from the home team). Tim Faranetta (fresh from winning the Easterns), and daughter, dominated with five bullets, as the rest of the field failed to find any consistency (each boat took a second except, of course, Tim). It's pretty jammed up after first, with Sue Rogers and PJ Brown tied for second at (both with 18), and Riley Kernan, Wayne Patterson (yes, that Wayne Patterson) and Ted Finkenhauer close behind. Ned (PRO), his committee and the patrol boaters put on a great day of river racing. There were also several spectators on power boats enjoying the show. All are welcome. Come out and watch the fun! Next race day is Sun 10/16 at 9:30.       (John Deitz)

October 16, 2011Races 6-8 – We had another fine October day with lots of sun, wind and water. Especially lots of water. For some of us. Conditions were warm, in the 60’s, with a freshening breeze from the SW, 9-19 mph with gusts to 29.  The same six M-scows were competing, but BH11 had new faces at skipper (Dave Magliaro) and crew (Brian Keeshen). Riley Kernan led the first race almost all the way, until Tim Faranetta beat him to the last windward mark and held on to cross the finish line first. PJ Brown took third. At the start of the second race, Ted Finkenhauer inadvertently bumped  PJ (a violation), and Ted decided then and there to wash his boat and all it’s contents, as quickly as possible (an uncommon penalty, you would think, but read on). After a short time and a little help from a patrol boat, Ted and John were upright once again, all squeaky clean. Tim and Riley battled for the top positions again with the same result as previously, while Wayne Patterson crossed the line third. The wind got wild for the third race, with near-max hull speeds achieved in the pre-race jockeying. Once the race was under way it was a challenge to hold the boats down while trying to ride the shifting wind. It proved the undoing of our new competitors Dave and Brian, who got knocked down as they approached the leeward mark, possibly due to an unintentional snap jibe. Shortly thereafter, another boat tangled with PJ Brown one time too many and this time it was Riley and I who took the “PJ Penalty”, thoroughly sinking our boat. Riley says the wind did it, but I say stay away from PJ Brown if you don’t have adequate floatation in your M-scow. Due to all the patrol boats and committee boat being involved in rescue operations, the third race was shortened and only Tim, Wayne and PJ completed it, finishing in that order. After a fun and eventful day of racing, it was memorable to see half the fleet hosing mud from the top of their masts back at the club. Once again and with extra feeling, thank you to the committee and patrol for all you do!

Racing was followed up by the Chili/Chowder bowl taste competition on the Upper Deck (results elsewhere.)

Tim Faranetta leads the Fall Series, with Riley Kernan moving up to second by a mere point over PJ Brown. Racing continues on Oct. 30 at 10:00 AM, followed at 12:30 by the Pumpkin Bowl, boating fun for all ages. Come and join us!       (JD)

October 30, 2011Racing cancelled  for safety reasons due to high winds, low temps and a shortage of patrol personnel.

November 5, 2011Races 9-12 – (FINAL)(report to come soon

Congratulations to Tim Faranetta for winning the 2011 MRYC Fall Series!
